Backlit Bottles and Lemon is another color harmony study.  I am fascinated with the abstractions created by the curve of glass next to another glass object.

May be purchased at auction at Daily Paintworks.

Signs of Spring is my entry for the Meaning of Spring Challenge at Daily Paintworks.  This is a Spanish oak tree right outside my art studio.  However, with all the pollen in the air I decided to paint it from a photograph.

May be purchased at auction at Daily Paintworks.

Orange Slices is still pursuing a study of color harmony and a nice break from green. It makes me think of "Go Broncos" since I used to live in Colorado.  I put the orange slices on a glass plate with silver decoration.

May be purchased at auction at Daily Paintworks.

Ode to Green was more of the color harmony series.  It is so much fun just pushing the paint around.

Orange wedges is another study in color harmony and reflections.  My intent was to keep it loose, but it just gets tighter as I attempt to correct just one more thing.

Green Apples and Mason Jar is another color harmony exercise with green and lavender.

Green Apples and Bottles is another study in color harmony.  I decided to keep it more painterly, which I like.

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Green Apples is a study in color harmony.  I started with a warm light and discovered that the colors were competing, but the cool light  brought everything into close harmony.  I also liked the way the light traveled through the lavender bottle creating a warm glow in the shadows. The one thing I'd change is to move the bottle to the left.  The bottle and peach background are the same width.  I keep discovering these things too late, so will work on composition.  Other than that I liked this study.

Here is Mr. Magoo Egg.  Ever since I took the Carol Marine class I've been wanting to try an egg painting.  I didn't really notice the face until it was completed.  Then it hit me it looks just like Mr. Magoo from the cartoons, but maybe you have to be a certain age to notice the likeness.

Click here if you want to bid on it.

Rose Study 2 was a timed study, only one hour to complete it so that I wouldn't try to noodle it to death. I also was trying to capture the very pale pink of the rose and my other attempts were too dark.  So contrary to the normal approach, I put the white down first then added a pale pink to it.
Rose Study was my first attempt at painting a rose. I'm still challenged by brushwork, but this is the best out of five. Maybe it would have been easier from life. I decided to eliminate everything but the rose and was able to capture the delicate pinks. I will keep trying.

The other day a friend of mine sent me a photo of a beautiful rose and asked me to try to paint it.  So after two failed attempts, I sat down to draw it so that I could really see it.  Unfortunately, I used some scrap computer paper with printing on it so the image isn't as clear as it could be.  What I learned is that it really quieted the left brain (as Betty Edwards said it would in Drawing on the Rightside of the Brain.)  Now I will try again to paint it!

Still life Study was done with a cool light.  It started out pretty loose, but kept getting tighter and tighter as I tried to correct edges.

Saturday, March 9, 2013

Tree Study 2 was completed on location at Sauer Beckmann Farm, a living history museum outside Stonewall, TX.  I happened to go there on a foggy morning with a light drizzle, which really made the colors more intense. I might not have noticed the tree on a sunny day as there are so many interesting structures to paint.

The Old Depot is in Waring, TX. (For you train buffs it was the depot for the San Antonio and Aransas Pass RR.)  Driving by you could easily miss it because today it is surrounded by a junk yard.

May be purchased at auction from Daily Paintworks.

Tree Study was done on location at a ranch in Fredericksburg, TX.  I love deciduous trees in winter when the form of the tree is visible.

Red Delicious is the end of the apple series.  The purpose of the series was to explore a simple subject using different lighting and background and to work on brushwork.

May be purchased at auction through Daily Paintworks.

Apples 3 is another study of warm light and cool shadows with the addition of reflections into plexiglass.

May be purchased at auction through Daily Paintworks.

Apples 2 is the second painting in the series studying light, color and brushwork.  It was completed using a warm light on a cool background.
May be purchased at auction at Daily Paintworks.

Apples is a study in light, color and brushwork. The light is a cool light.  This painting is part of a series of apple studies.

May be purchased at auction at Daily Paintworks.

Water and Rock was painted from a photo taken at Turtle Creek.  I love the abstract shapes created by flowing water and the contrast between wet rock and exposed rock.  Water is similar to the glass studies done earlier in that you are not really painting the water, but the shapes and colors you are seeing as light passes through it.

Along Turtle Creek was painted on location near Kerrville, TX, but finished in the studio.  The egret was hanging out with me all afternoon on the rocks, in the water and flying overhead, but never stayed put long enough for his portrait.

May be purchased at auction through Daily Paintworks.
